Is Marissa Mayer Looking to Sell Yahoo?, Three and a half years ago, Marissa Mayer became chief executive of Yahoo and said she would try to return the Internet giant to relevance. On Tuesday, it looked like Mayer realized that this may not happen. The chief executive said a company press release accompanying its fourth-quarter earnings, “Today, we’re announcing a strategic plan that we strongly believe will enable us to accelerate Yahoo’s transformation.” That plan includes a broad 15% cut of the company’s workforce, the closure of various departments and the elimination of some of its digital verticals. Paul Verna, senior analyst at eMarketer, says, “It’s hard to envision a scenario other than Yahoo being acquired outright, or Marissa Mayer leaving, or both. The status quo isn’t sustainable.” News that Mayer might finally be exploring a sale comes after mounting pressure from investors that has turned into a near constant barrage of criticism over her control of the company.
